Description

This antique
African
headrest was hand carved from a single piece of wood by the Luba people of the Congo
. Headrests in the Luba culture are objects that display high status and serve as cherished belongings for the Luba elites. They wear elaborate tribal hairstyles which take many hours to create and are often embellished with beads, shells, butter, and colored pigments. These hairstyles require headrests under the neck to protect and preserve these labor-intensive hairdos. Using the headrest can preserve the painstaking creation for up to three months.  Headrests are brought with the owner everywhere. Men often wear them on their belts.  This Luba headrest measures 8.25 inches across the top and 7.50 inches tall. It is in excellent condition without any breaks, cracking, or marring  of the wood except for a few very small dents on the base. The sculped male figures reinforce the legitimacy of the owner’s status. This specimen is very desirable and would make a fine addition to any African collection.
