    Description

This is a antique hand carved wooden African three legged stool which was tribally made from a single piece of wood by the Wahehe / Hehe tribe of Tanzania, Africa. The Wahehe tribal people are primarily an agricultural people farming maize and raising cattle who were eventually to be called the Hehe by Europeans which stuck. The Wahehe live in isolation in Uhehe on a highland in southwestern Tanzania, northeast of Lake Nyasa. Historically the Wahehe are famous for vanquishing a German expedition at Lugalo on August 17th 1891 and maintaining their resistance for seven years thereafter. These antique Wahehe or Hehe three legged stools are sometimes mistakenly referred to as 'milking stools' which is incorrect as these stools are and were everyday objects used for all tasks around the village and the homeplace.
This rare African Hehe tribal wooden stool measures 39.50 inches around the circumference of the top of the seat including the leg bump outs and is 9.50 inches tall and 13 inches wide. This piece weighs 5 pounds and 10 ounces. Great tribally used antique rustic condition with a lot of assorted wear and a old crack to the top of the seat in the wood. This specimen is very desirable and would make a fine addition to any African collection.
